Common Reasons for Breast Revision Surgery

Posted June 17, 2015 in Breast Augmentation, Breast Revision

Since breast implants typically provide a fantastic improvement to the breasts, it should come as no surprise that breast augmentation is the most popular procedure in plastic surgery. While breast implants are expected to be long lasting, a variety of factors can sometimes cause less than satisfactory results. Fortunately, breast revision surgery can be performed to correct any complication and restore a more natural and attractive breast appearance. The following are some of the most common reasons that women undergo breast revision surgery after their primary breast augmentation.

Increasing Implant Size

Believe it or not, the most common reason that women undergo breast revision surgery is to increase the size of their implants.

Capsular Contracture

Once breast augmentation is performed, scar tissue forms around the implants due to the body’s natural response to foreign objects. In some instances, the fibrous tissue becomes too thick and squeezes the implant. If the tissue capsule contracts too much, it can distort the appearance of the breast.

Implant Rupture

Unusual circumstances can cause breast implants to develop “wear spots” over time, which can result in tears or ruptures in the implant. When this occurs, the material inside the implant can leak into the surrounding tissue. While the interior saline fluid or silicone gel does not pose a health risk, an implant rupture generally makes the breast appear misshapen.

Double Bubble Deformity

In rare instances, an implant can fall beneath the breast fold and create a “double bubble” appearance. This typically happens when the implant is placed lower than the breast to avoid a breast lift during the primary augmentation surgery.

Switching From Saline to Silicone Gel

While saline implants have long been a good implant choice, advancements in the development of silicone implants have caused many women to desire the newer versions of these gel implants instead.
